| [ | Beating on my Eardrums: |
| | Jean-Michel Jarre - "Chronologie Part 1" | ] | Just about 50 minutes of music finished for the conspiracy album. The first four tracks are set and total about 25 minutes and the last track is set, it's around 18 minutes. There's one "scene" in track 5 that's comprised mostly of effects with subtle background music that I haven't gotten to yet. I'm about 4 minutes into track 6 right now. 7 and 8 will include lots of audio samples that I haven't gathered yet. I've got to get those before I can really start much on the music. It's a lot easier to write a section of music to fit a particular sample than it is to write the music and then stretch or contract the passage to fit the clip. It seems "fixed" when I hear it if that's done. It's looking like the album will end up clocking in close to 70 minutes. So long as tracks 7 and 8 aren't 14-minute monsters I think it will all fit on a CD in the end.
For now, I'm just looking to get these tracks recorded. It would probably be pretty difficult to perform a lot of this live just due to the number of simultaneous instruments and samples. At some points there are 2 synths, 3 guitars, a bass, drums, and audio samples going.
So while I'm at it, is there anyone out there interested in recording some synth? It's mostly just some chords since I used synths mainly to thicken the sound, though there is a bit of piano and guitar doubling in there. Get ahold of me if you're interested. |

| | "Hey You" - Pink Floyd | ] | So I've gotten really into investing as of late. Like anything I jump into, I've been researching obsessively, it's something I've always found interesting, but this is the first time in my life that I've actually had some money to put into the market. The more I learn the more I wish that more people my age were getting into it. There's so much upside when it's done right. It also kinda bothers me how it's considered socially unacceptable to talk about money. People may think it's rude, intrusive, arrogant, I'm not quite sure myself. As a red-white-and-blue capitalist pig--OK, maybe not a pig. Bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered--I figure that money is as valid a conversation topic as politics and is often just as controversial and debatable.
In any event, check out www.investopedia.com for a footing. If dollar-cost averaging is for you, check out www.sharebuilder.com.
I've been sick the past few days, it sucks. I hack, wheeze, cough, sneeze, and just feel pretty shitty in general. It's one of those things where it's bad in the morning and at night, and feels better in the middle of the day. Bleh.
I'm now driving Dale. Thanks Jack. Nobody pulls out in front of me anymore.
Urrkah made me some soup and goodies for dinner and brought them over. She's easily the most thoughtful person I know. :D
You should listen to some Floyd.
I have some really intelligent friends. Some are complete idiots, however.
Tomorrow's Friday, finally. |

As much as I respect his right to say whatever he wants, I think this guy is a complete nutjob and is doing more harm to the country than he thinks he is. Why do people keep putting the microphone in front him? *sigh* |

| | Conspiracy MIDI Tracks | ] | A couple days ago I received some mail from the AARP. Apparently they think I just turned 50 and they want me to become a member. There was even a sample card in there.
Even though the AARP is a far-left liberal organization (though not quite as bad for America as the ACLU) I think I may be willing to part with my principles just long enough to finish the sign-up procedure and get a membership card. The novelty of being an AARP member 32 years before I'm supposed to be eligible just may outweigh giving $12.95 to lobbyists on the wrong side of the aisle.
Can you buy alcohol using an AARP card as proof of age? "Honestly, I'm 50." |

| | MIDI tracks | ] | Last Monday I went to the debut of the new live Cream DVD at a movie theater in Novi. Erika's mom won tickets on the radio. It was pretty awesome, very much recommended if you're into Cream, Eric Clapton, classic rock, the blues, jazz, jams/improvisation, etc. They gave away some prize packs, Urr's mom and I both won one. Inside was the 2-disc DVD set, the dual-disc CD from the same concert, and a Cream T-shirt. Schweeet.
I've been working on a concept album for a little while now. I started it just before leaving for Seattle, and picked it up when I got back. There's probably 24 minutes of music or so finished, about 4 songs are done. I'm thinking there will probably be 9 songs total.
It's been going very well. I've been exporting the MIDI tracks from Guitar Pro and then converting them to WAVs. WAV files, if you didn't know, are HUGE because they're not "lossy" like MP3s. An export of the first 20 minutes of music was about 130MB, compared to about 20 for an MP3 of the same music. Anyways, I'm importing the WAVs into Cool Edit Pro 2.0, which they don't make anymore unfortunately. I prefer it over ProTools. Within CEP I'm able to pretty much plan and produce the album before recording, so I can work on the timing and placement of audio clips and such. This way I can overcome all the hurdles before putting any sound on tape. It would suck to allow 32 bars for an audio clip only to find out after you record it than you need an additional 16 or 32 bars to fit the clip in. All I'll have to do is record real instruments in place of the midi ones and drop them into place (well, it's not THAT easy, there's still production necessary at that point); the extra audio clips will already be adjusted and timed.
But definitely buy that Cream CD/DVD. |

| | none | ] | Just finished packing for Seattle. After work I went to VG's and Kmart to gather various things I needed. Dropped everything off at the house, then went out to eat with Erika. We saw Jenna Cross while we were there and talked for a bit, it was good to run into her. We stopped by Hollywood to pick up a movie, in this case Happy Texas. Ryan and I had seen it a few years ago and I remember finding it hilarious. Still funny.
After Erika left to go home I started packing everything up--several small lists made it easier because I'm just disorganized like that. Now it's 2:30 and we've got to leave the house at 4. I'm thinking I'm just going to get a bite to eat, take a shower and load up the car. I'll have plenty of time to sleep on the way to Denver. I should be arriving there about 7:45 MST, 9:45 EST.
After a short excursion in the City of Tyler, I'll be off to my 'final destination.' Final is not a good word to use in the air travel industry. In this case the final destination is the Puget Sound area, King County WA. Since I couldn't find someone who could loan me their digital camera, I've resorted to crappy disposables (eh, work with whatcha got I suppose). Pictures to come..just..not right away.
By the way, is it just me, or does the layout of Denver International Airport look a little bit like a certain flag that used to fly in Germany?

The concert was fun. A lot of slow country songs, but the 15-20 minutes of extended instrumental ass-kickage at the end ruled. It was good to hang out with Urrkah, Jimbo, Lauren and Megan.
Lauren's open house was a lot of fun. Saw some people I know I'll see soon and some I might not (Alexis, Evan, Matt, etc.) Hopefully I'll run into everyone again soon.

Octavarium is so freakin' cool, go buy it.
I'm cutting my hair off. Anyone that doesn't like this, hang out with me soon, before it's gone.
I didn't know they still made lucky strike, I thought that died off in the 50's or 60's.
I haven't listened to Scenes from a Memory for a long time, it's a really good album. (yeah, I call it an album, doesn't matter if it's on vinyl or not)
I have to work tomorrow and I don't really want to, I'll be up late tonight and probably dead when I go in.
I should clean my room soon, I haven't really hung out at my own house in a while and should start having people over here.
I haven't played bass in a while, just guitar.
I was looking at a car, but took some advice from my dad. As a result, I'm still looking. I hope I find it soon.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th.
Happy birthday, America. |

Turns out the DJ for the SBC Center is a huge Dream Theater fan and has been playing them 2 or 3 times per game. He's also been playing Porcupine Tree and other prog bands.
He created a poll on the DT forums with 4 songs, whichever one gets the most votes will be played at the beginning of the 3rd quarter on Sunday before the ball is put in play.
What a cool guy. Now I want to watch the game (I don't follow basketball) just to see what song is played.
Now on to the leftover pizza and cheesy bread from last night. |
